Hi, I recently read an older post about questions asked during Cathay Pacific's interview process.
One of best place in las vegas to play slots was directed to describe the difference between leading edge flaps and leading edge slats.
I would appreciate it if another forum member can answer this question for me.

Referring to the powered slats; Powered - the slat extension can be controlled by the pilot.
This is commonly used on airliners.
This type of high lifting device allows you to have a higher Clmax.
The problem with it is that it gives you a very high attitude angle during descend and icing formation can occur on this area.
It doesn´t affect the zero lift angle of attack.
On the other hand, l.
Basically both increase the Clmax.
LE Flaps have no gap and function purely to increase the lift of the wing.
Lets not forget the Leading Edge DROOP on the original Tridents.
They came out like slats, but there was no gap.
Leading Edge Flaps and Leading Edge DROOP provide an immediate increase in camber, and therefore lift.
The resultant stall speed is reduced, allowing for reduced Takeoff and Landing speeds.
Leading Edge Slats have no effect upon lift, in fact, at low angles of attack may reduce lift.
Their effect is to delay separation of the airflow at higher angles of attack, thus stall speed is reduced, allowing for reduced Takeoff and Landing speeds, exactly as for Leading Edge Flaps.

Join them; it only takes a minute: I have heard pilots talk about flaps and slats, seemingly interchangeably.
Is there a difference between a flap and a slat or they are the same thing?
Flaps are at the back of the wing, slats are at the front.
See these diagrams with angle of attack and lift coefficient: As the lift coefficient is inversely proportional to the minimum airspeed, a higher CL will allow a lower Vmin.

Other parts of the airplane, such as the windshield and pitot tubes, are heated to prevent ice buildup.
On the ground, ice forms on the entire surface of the airplane, resulting in significant weight and the distortion of the airflow, which is potentially dangerous.
Consequently, ice must be completely removed from the airplane before takeoff.
Heated fluid knocks the ice off the airplane, then a thick gel is applied, so any ice or snow that falls will not stick to the airplane and will blow off during the takeoff roll.

Trying to heat the entire airplane would require a very large amount of hot air and a very heavy mechanism; therefore, it is not efficient.

Slats are the same as slots - except they open and close.
In fact, slots are often called slats - though technically they're a "fixed slat.

Slats are categorized into three types: fixed a slotautomatic, and powered.
Automatic Slats - Let The Wind Do The Work Automatic slats open and close aerodynamically.
They're not managed by the pilot - they're managed by airflow.
When air approaches the leading edge of an airfoil, it divides - some flowing over the top of the wing, and some flowing over the bottom.
The spot where the airflow splits is called the "stagnation point.
As you can see below, it pushes the slat closed.
When the airfoil is at a high angle of attack, the stagnation point moves below the leading edge and behind the slat.
Air flowing up and over the wing pushes the slat open.

However, pilots had to check the slats for debris before takeoff.
If a slat stuck and refused to open or close, the results could be catastrophic.
Powered difference between slats and slots The Modern Slat Powered slats appear on many large aircraft and provide the same benefit of an automatic slat.
However, they're electrically or hydraulically powered - increasing reliability.
The flight crew sets the slat position via cockpit controls.

Slats have a gap between the slat and the LE, airflow through the slot is redirected over the top surface of the wing, increasing airflow over the wing which increases lift. Slotted flaps work on the same princicple, the slots in the flaps allows for the airflow to remain stay attached through higher angles of attack, ergo creating more lift.
